IUGR & Nutritional Status
The Ponderal Index (PI) Calculator assesses a newborn's nutritional status and body proportionality from birth weight and length. As described in the app, it distinguishes between symmetrical and asymmetrical intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) — a distinction that birth-weight percentiles alone cannot make.
PI = (Weight in grams ÷ Length in cm³) × 100, per the app.
The app labels this 'Asymmetrical IUGR,' describing it as critically low and consistent with severe protein-energy malnutrition (PEM), warranting immediate clinical evaluation.
A PI of 2.0–2.5 is categorized as symmetrical IUGR, where weight and length are both proportionally reduced (chronic, early-onset restriction); below 2.0 is asymmetrical IUGR, where weight is disproportionately low relative to length.
Birth weight in grams (validated range 500–6000 g) and birth length in cm (validated range 25–65 cm).
